Insurance Blog often gets unusual requests, more proof that Insurance is not grey and boring, the latest being particularly unusual so we thought wed rise to the challenge.
A mature student friend of ours was struggling with his first year accountancy exams when asked to write an essay on the following, so he thought hed approach us for some answers and help writing his assignment.
1.Explain how Insurance shares risk across the population?
2.What is a fair insurance premium?
3.How can adverse selection prevent Insurance being available at a fair premium?
4.What strategies do insurance companies follow to reduce the problem of adverse selection?
So we farmed it out to our technical expert Dave Healey and this is what he came up with.

A fine of £60,000 ($97,116) was levied against Westwood Yarns following the death of a worker cleaning a baling machine. The employer was also ordered to pay £20,625 ($33,383) court costs. A maintenance worker was killed when a baling machine he was working on re-activated according to information from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). Bradford Crown Court heard that Gary Lee, an employee for 20 years, was untrained in the proper way to clean the baling machine. One of the most important decisions a claims examiner must make is whether to get a medical-legal report. Before the 2004 reform law (SB 899), each party could choose their own qualified medical examiner (QME) for a medical-legal report. Claims examiners and defense attorneys choose QMEs who tended to find no industrial injury or low disability; applicant attorneys choose QMEs who tended to find industrial injury and higher disability.
