Airline passengers face body scanners and double searches

Airline passengers will face double searches and profiling after Gordon Brown demanded extra security in UK airports.

Full body scanners will be introduced at Heathrow within weeks where they will be used for flights to all destinations and not just those bound for the United States.

The Department for Transport will instruct other airports across the country to install the scanners, costing around £100,000 each, as soon as possible. As well as being searched as they pass into departures, new rules will allow staff to pat down passengers at the gate, immediately before they board.

It takes roughly 20 seconds to screen an individual passenger. Read more…

Coach tour misses Christmas market and visits car boot sale instead!

It has emerged that a coach full of British tourists expecting to see one of Europe’s busiest Christmas markets ended up in a closed car boot sale after the driver mistakenly took them to the wrong destination.

It was only on their return to Hull, East Yorkshire, that the group realised the market they were heading for – Belgium’s Winter Wonders festival in the centre of Brussels – had been less than three miles up the road!

One underwriter commented in late 2008 that the change would occur on 1/1/09 because prices were too low.  Obviously wrong.

William R. Berkley, chairman and chief executive officer of WR Berkley Corp., sees a turn in the first half of 2010 (see here, here or here, from late 2009):

At current pricing levels with existing low interest rates, we believe the industry is operating at a net loss on an accident year basis; and a turn in the cycle is inevitable. We

Stories That Matter

I was sitting at a table in a chilly ballroom in Charlotte, N.C., and had just laid down my dinner fork. The lights dimmed and everyone in the room shuffled their chairs—a few hundred of them—to face the stage. Dinner was over and the presentation was about to begin. Within moments, I was transfixed.

It was my first realLIFEstories award dinner. At the time—almost eight years ago—I was a seasoned journalist, but new to the world of insurance and financial services. I was tasked with writing about the event, but had no idea what was in store for me.

What happened next took the concept of life insurance from the realm of the theoretical into the realm of reality for me. I watched t
